Reductil Review

Reductil is an appetite suppressant in pill form that was once quite popular in Europe in the weight loss treatment of severely obese patients. In the United States, this prescription diet aid is sold under the name Meridia. The drug is supposed to suppress the physical desire for hunger, tricking the body into feeling full while eating less. But does Reductil work and is it safe?

Ingredients

The official site for Reductil does not offer a list of ingredients for this diet pill, nor could one be found easily elsewhere. What the site does tell you is that you take the Reductil/Meridia pill once a day with or without food and that it is prescribed for people whose weight may put them at risk for health and weight related illness such as heart disease and stroke. The site then goes on to say that if you already have heart disease or if your blood pressure is above normal you should not take this drug.

These statements make one wonder just who should be taking this medication? It seems to make little sense that this drug could cause harm in people who have high blood pressure, yet is designed to treat those people who have the highest likelihood of having high blood pressure, those who are overweight. In fact, when high blood pressure is present in a person who is overweight even by a few pounds, the first thing that most doctors recommend to that patient is losing weight. Yet, a drug that is designed for the purpose of helping people to lose weight is not safe for a large majority of people who need to lose the weight for health reasons. Does this make sense?

In Europe, this contradiction is no longer an issue due to the fact that studies showed an increase in non-fatal heart attacks and strokes among patients who were using Reductil and it has since been banned. It is, however, still being prescribed to people in the United States.

Does Reductil Really Work?

Reviews concerning Reductil and Meridia do indicate that this drug may indeed help in the reduction of weight for some people. However, almost every review is quick to point out that the risks may not be worth the amount of weight that you will lose using this product.

Is It Safe?

As most people know, almost all medications have side effects, prescription medications often carry some negative and possible serious side effects. However, when you have a prescription drug that is designed to help people lose weight to help prevent the risk of heart attack and then that drug carries the risk of causing a heart attack, it is almost impossibly naive to consider such a drug as safe. Reductil has been shown to cause heart attacks and strokes in a large enough number of people taking the drug, that it has been taken off the market in Europe. One would expect that in light of this information, the FDA in this country will soon follow suit.

Due to the severe risks that will be incurred by anyone using this drug, it is recommended that people wishing for a diet aid that suppresses appetite choose one that has less dangerous side effects.
